History of the Friendship Four An unusual hockey story

The Friendship Four is the only officially sanctioned NCAA Division I hockey tournament held outside the United States.

After Boston and Belfast became sister cities, the tournament was created, taking inspiration from Boston’s legendary Beanpot hockey tournament, to deepen the connection between the two cities.

These athletes are not only competing for the coveted Belpot Trophy, the results of the tournament also impact their NCAA rankings.

How it all started

The roots of the Friendship Four were planted in 2010, during a historic game between the Boston Bruins and the Belfast Giants. In 2014 a Sister Cities Agreement between Boston and Belfast for formed to help propagate economic development, educational exchange, cultural ties and tourism.

This gave the tournament the proper environment to thrive. Modeled after Boston’s beloved Beanpot Tournament, the Friendship Four has grown into a celebrated event that strengthens civic, academic and athletic relationships while competing for the coveted Belpot Trophy.

They Said it wouldn't last

Though Belfast has not traditionally been known as a hockey city, the sport has played a unique and unifying role in our community. In a city once marked by division, the Belfast Giants have become a shared symbol, and the sport itself has offered a neutral and inclusive platform, one that embraces a spirit of togetherness.

That legacy has allowed the team and the tournament to thrive over the past 25 years.

About Belfast, Northern Ireland’s Capital
